The focus this week will be on interim head coach Jack Del Rio, who takes over for John Fox who will miss the game after having heart surgery this week. Fox who was playing golf near his home felt lightheaded and had to be taken to the hospital. Del Rio who has been around the game since his playing days started in 1985 and was recently the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003-2011. In his nine seasons with the Jaguars he led the team to a 68-71 record and two playoff appearances.
For the Chargers it is an important game in terms of wild card standings in the AFC. A second straight loss after falling to the Washington Redskins in overtime would drop them to 4-5 on the season. Rivers is putting together one of the best seasons of his career in 2013. In eight games this season, Rivers has thrown for 2,473 yards and 17 touchdowns. If he continues at this pace he would finish with 4,946 yards and 34 touchdowns.
On the opposite sideline, Peyton Manning is also having a career year for the Broncos as he has already thrown for seven touchdown passes in a game this season, 2,919 yards passing on the season and 29 touchdown passes. Continuing at this pace, Manning could throw for as much as 5,838 yards and 58 touchdown passes. The individual awards and stats must be in the back of his mind as he focuses on leading the Broncos to a Super Bowl title but they need to win the division as well as Sunday’s game vs. San Diego – Manning has 18 career INT when playing against San Diego (2nd most vs. any NFL team) but still has a 6-3 record when playing the Chargers during the regular season.
