The Chiefs suffered a scare earlier this week when running back Jamaal Charles went down in practice and was carted off the field. There were rampant reports surrounding the health of that ACL tear Charles suffered in 2011 flaring back up. However, it ended up being only a foot sprain, and the X rays were negative. It’s unlikely that Charles will be in action against San Francisco on Friday.

Kansas City will continue to get ready for the new season, as both quarterback Alex Smith and head coach Andy Reid made their debuts on the sidelines. Smith finished 7 of 8 on the night and looked quite comfortable with the play calling by Reid. We will see if this continues to spill over into the second preseason game.

For the 49ers, it was a defensive battle against Denver in their opener, losing 10-6. There aren’t many positives on offense, though quarterback Colin Kaepernick went a perfect 4 for 4 in a brief appearance.

The San Francisco defense looked solid, limiting the Broncos to just 220 total yards for the night.

The 49ers secondary can expect to be tested quite a bit with Reid’s play calling, so it will be a good test for the revamped unit.
