The Patriots might have wanted to rest the starters for the majority of this one, if not all. But a particularly bad performance on the offensive side of the ball in a blowout loss last week might be enough to warrant some first team plays.
New England simply couldn’t take care of the ball, turning it over four times in the first half, en route to 40-9 loss at the hands of the Detroit Lions. The absence of potential playmakers on the Patriots was obvious, and Tom Brady might have his hardest work cut out for him over the last decade.
It’s a good thing that the team gets one more shot to iron things out this week against the Giants.
As for New York, they dropped to the team they share a home stadium with in the Jets in Week 3, 24-21. Though the first-team defense looked pretty good. The Giants were able to create several turnovers on defense and really flustered Geno Smith.
Coming into this one, it should be pretty standard operating procedure for New York, with the starters not expected to see much of the field in preparation for Week 1 of the regular season. The running game is still a central focus on offense though, as they look to solidify a successful formula for a solid ground attack.
