Both the Colts and the Bengals were playoff teams last season, each earning a wildcard slot in the AFC. Those expectations of the postseason remain the same for both coming into the 2013 NFL season.
Of the two, expectations are probably a bit higher in Cincinnati. The Bengals are loaded on the defensive side of the ball, and should have enough talent on offense to contend for the AFC North title and maybe even the AFC Championship.
Quarterback Andy Dalton needs to get a bit more consistent, but he has playmakers. Wide receiver A.J. Green is one of the best in the NFL, and warrants a double-team every time he is on the field.
For Indianapolis, the expectations to challenge Houston in the AFC South race are there. Andrew Luck excelled in his first season, and now he has the chance to follow up that great rookie year with an even better one.
Both fan bases for Indianapolis and Cincinnati have a lot to be excited about. For this preseason matchup though we probably won’t see too much of the playbook. This will be about some of those final roster slots being made, and the teams getting down to 53 players.
