Washington lost to Stanford last week but hardly dropped in the polls. It was a 31-28 defeat on the road to the No.5 ranked Cardinal, with a very questionable call that overturned a fourth-down conversion by the Huskies on their final drive to end the game. Washington certainly showed that they are for real, and get a chance to pull off the upset of the college football season this week against the high-flying Ducks.
The home-field advantage will be important for the Huskies on Saturday, as Washington’s stadium is one of the loudest in college football. Of course to get loud, the crowd will need something to cheer for. Early scores and stops by Washington will be important, as the Ducks have a very quick-strike offense.
Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota might be the Heisman Trophy favorite at this point in the season, but this is by far the best team that the Ducks will have played up to this point. Mariota accounted for seven touchdowns in 2.5 quarters last week against Colorado. We suspect that won’t happen this week, but it’s hard to predict what Oregon is capable of.
This is a statement game for both teams. Washington having to play Stanford and Oregon in back-to-back weeks certainly is a difficult task, but if they can somehow manage to get a win, look out for the Huskies the rest of the season.
This is one of the most intriguing games of the college football weekend, and definitely should be one worth watching.
