Following Big Win Over Oregon (4) Stanford Visits USC In Prime Time

It doesn’t get any bigger for Stanford than what they were able to do last Thursday night at home against Oregon for their season. The win over the Ducks not only gives the Cardinal an inside track in the Pac 12 North, but it boosts their BCS Championship position as well. Going on the road to face the USC Trojans Saturday night will be an immediate challenge though. USC and Stanford is the prime time ABC matchup at 8 pm ET.

Stanford Cardinal / USC Trojans

It appears that the Cardinal have the blueprint for beating the Ducks. That task surrounds clock management, and smash mouth football running right at them. Stanford makes no excuses for who they are as a football team. They are well aware of their identity and play to their strengths. It’s been a recipe for winning football games and has got them to where they are right now, the No.4 ranked team in the country.

But it will be a tough test in a hostile environment at USC on Saturday, with College Gameday on hand for the occasion. The Trojans have won three games in a row, and put up 62 points in their last outing against Cal.

It’s a whole different animal in Stanford though, and USC knows exactly what they need to do in order to come out on top. The only question is whether or not they will be able to execute well enough to get their defense off the field by creating some stops.

Allowing just 19.6 points per game, the Trojans defense ranks in the top-20 in scoring. It’s been the offensive side of the ball that has created issues. They average a mere 29 points per game, which by USC standards is not up to par. The offensive explosion against the Golden Bears last Saturday had to generate some confidence, but whether or not that spills over against a top-five team in Stanford remains to be seen.
