While it’s difficult to put much stock into preseason results, both the Lions and Browns did get a victory in Week 1. For Detroit it was a 26-17 win over the New York Jets. For Cleveland, it was a 27-19 win over the St. Louis Rams.
The Browns played first last week on Thursday night and quarterback Brandon Weeden looked pretty good. Weeden went 10 for 13 for 112 yards and a touchdown during his appearance on the field. Actually the trio of quarterbacks on the field did well. Brian Hoyer went 10 of 14 with a touchdown while Jason Campbell completed 6 of 7 passes. The passing efficiency was pretty high.
Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford had only a brief opening preseason appearance, completing 3 of 8 passes for 58 yards. All three of those completions happened to be to Calvin Johnson, who had the same stat line for the opener.
Top-three pick Ezekiel Ansah made his presence known right out of the gate, intercepting a pass from Mark Sanchez and returning it eight yards for the touchdown. Not a bad way to make your debut. Ansah is expected to be a big playmaker rushing the passer, and seemed to play well against the Jets offensive line.
Reggie Bush made his Detroit debut, carrying the ball three times for just five yards.
Expect to see much of the same in terms of length of time played for the starters in Week 2, though is could extend a little longer.
Cleveland created three turnovers on defense last week as the Browns were getting after the Rams receivers.
